How is the turnover rate calculated?

The turnover rate compares how many employees left against your average number of active employees.

Turnover Rate = Separations ÷ Average Active Employees

  • Separations — the total number of employees who left during the period.
  • Average Active Employees — Retain counts your active (currently employed) employees for each day in the quarter, adds those daily counts together, and divides by the number of days in the quarter.
