What happens to an engagement survey invite or response if an employee separates during the survey month?

If an employee separates after the engagement survey opens on the 1st, whether their response counts depends on whether they finished it first.

Eligibility is set when the survey opens. Because the employee was active on the 1st, they count toward the group invited to that survey.

  • If they completed the survey before being terminated, their response is included in the results.
  • If they hadn't taken it yet, their invitation closes once the termination is processed in Retain. Their survey link stops working — if they open it afterward, they'll see a message that the link has expired.

If the termination was voluntary, the employee may receive an exit survey instead, depending on your account settings.

Example: The engagement survey opens May 1, and the employee is terminated May 8. They stay in the eligible group because they were active on May 1. If they completed the survey between May 1 and May 8, that response counts. Their invitation closes when the termination is processed, so if they try the link on May 9, it shows as expired.
